Description

Deformed steel bars — rebar — are the reinforcement in reinforced concrete. Ribs rolled into the surface lock the bar to the concrete so the two act as one: the concrete takes the compression, the steel takes the tension that concrete cannot.

The grade — the yield strength the design assumes — is the property that matters most, and the mill test certificate is what ties the bar delivered to it.

What it’s used for

Footings and foundations, columns, beams, slabs, walls, stairs, retaining structures, culverts, and bridge and highway work. In seismic design the ductility of the bar matters as much as its strength: the structure survives an earthquake by yielding in the right places, and the reinforcement has to stretch rather than snap.

Specifying rebar

Three things fix an order: the grade, from the drawings; the diameters and quantities, best taken straight from the bar schedule; and the lengths, where a schedule again saves guesswork. Bending is done cold to the radii the schedule gives. Bar sizing, spacing and detailing belong with your engineer, working to the National Structural Code of the Philippines; we supply against the schedule.

Store bars off the ground, covered, and sorted by size and grade. A light surface rust is normal and does not affect the bond with concrete; loose scale and mud do, and should be cleaned off before the pour.

What grade and standard is your rebar?

Specified to ASTM A615/A615M, the standard for deformed carbon-steel reinforcing bars; the properties in the table above are the ones that specification carries. Your drawings state the grade — the yield strength the design assumes — so give us that, and ask for the mill test certificate that ties the delivered heat number to its tested yield.

Can rebar be cut and bent on site?

Yes. Cutting to length is one of the services we offer, and bending is normally done cold on site or in a bar-bending yard to the radii in the bending schedule. Bars should not be heated to bend them, and a bar that has been bent should not be straightened and re-bent at the same point — both change the steel.

How should rebar be stored?

Off the ground, on bearers, covered, and sorted by size and grade so the right bar goes into the right member. A light surface rust is normal and does not harm the bond with concrete; loose scale, pitting or mud does, and has to be cleaned off before the pour.

What do you need from me to quote?

The grade, the diameters and the quantity of each, the lengths, and the delivery point. A bar schedule from the drawings is ideal, because it fixes all of those at once. We do not publish per-tonne prices, because steel is a traded commodity and a figure written down today misleads within a quarter.
