MHZ Hot Rolled Z Type Steel for Durable Construction
Description
An MHZ hot-rolled Z-type sheet pile carries its interlocks at the outer edges of the flanges — as far from the neutral axis as the profile allows. That is what makes the Z the structurally efficient sheet pile: the full section modulus is available without shear having to transfer across a joint, so the wall behaves the way the catalogue says it will, with less conservatism in the design.
Where it fits
Deep excavations and basements, permanent retaining walls, quay walls, seawalls and river training works, flood defences, cut-off walls, and any wall where deflection limits govern. Being hot-rolled, it drives well in difficult ground and tolerates extraction and reuse, so it also serves in heavy temporary works.
In Philippine conditions the case is stronger than elsewhere: typhoons and seasonal flooding make watertightness a requirement rather than a refinement, soft coastal soils favour a wall that deforms before it fails, and constrained urban sites reward a wall installed hard against a boundary.
Grade
Hot-rolled sheet piling is produced to EN 10248, in S355GP and S430GP. The higher grade buys roughly 20 percent more capacity for the same geometry, which can let a shallower profile do the work of a deeper one where headroom or driving depth is constrained — so the premium sometimes pays for itself in tonnage. Ask for the mill test certificate tying the delivered heat number to its tested properties.
Corrosion
For anything permanent, corrosion is the design question. A pile passes through atmospheric, splash, tidal, immersion and buried zones, each corroding at a different rate, and the splash zone governs. Concentrating corrosion allowance and coating where the metal actually goes is both more effective and cheaper than protecting the whole length equally.
Ordering from us
Tell us the retained height and required embedment, the ground conditions or soil investigation data, the groundwater level, the total wall length and any corners, whether the works are temporary or permanent, the site and its access, and your programme. With those we can quote against a real section. Availability and lead times vary with what is in the yard and on order, and we do not publish per-tonne prices — what drives sheet pile cost explains what moves the number. Ask us for a current quotation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose a Z-type section over a U-type?
Interlock position. Z-sections carry their interlocks at the flange extremities, away from the neutral axis, so the full section modulus is available without shear having to transfer across a joint. U-sections carry theirs at the centre of the wall, on the neutral axis, which is why they are often crimped or welded in permanent works to develop the same capacity. If bending governs your design, Z is the more efficient use of steel.
What steel grade are hot-rolled Z sections?
Hot-rolled sheet piling is produced to EN 10248, which specifies S355GP with a minimum yield of 355 N/mm2 and S430GP at 430 N/mm2. The higher grade buys roughly 20 percent more capacity for the same geometry, which can let a shallower profile do the work of a deeper one where driving depth or headroom is limited. Both keep carbon low enough to weld on site without preheat in most conditions.
Can MHZ sections be extracted and reused?
Yes. Hot-rolled interlocks tolerate driving and extraction better than cold-formed ones, so sections used in temporary works can be recovered and re-driven on another project. That reuse is often what makes the economics work, because the cost is amortised across jobs rather than written off against one. Plan extraction from the start; sections damaged in the ground lose that value.
What information do you need to quote?
Retained height and required embedment, ground conditions or soil investigation data, groundwater level, total wall length and any corners or curves, whether the works are temporary or permanent, site location and access, and your programme. With those we can quote against a real section rather than a guess.
